Hepatitis C is a virus which affects a person’s liver. It causes inflammation and fibrosis. The virus is carried by the blood and other bodily fluids and it affects the liver. The liver is a vital organ in the body and its main function is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract. The liver also detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs. Hepatitis C causes the death of liver cells.
Hepatitis C if left untreated can lead to liver damage and cirrhosis. To prevent this, proper treatment combined with a liver-friendly diet should be adopted. A special diet may not be essential, but there are certain foods which when included in the diet helps to maintain good liver health and to curb Hepatitis C.
Some of the foods that should be included in the diet for Hepatitis C are:
Fruits and vegetables
A healthy diet should include plenty of fruit and vegetables. They are enriched with vitamins and minerals which are essential for the healthy functioning of the liver. Try to consume at least 5 portions (one portion is about 80 grams) of fruit and vegetables. Fresh fruit is ideal to maintain your health. Avoid canned or frozen foods for Hepatitis C.
Leafy green vegetables are particularly beneficial as they help to reduce the fat in the liver. Kale, spinach, and cabbage are highly recommended. Kale is a superfood which is fast catching on as a dietary requirement of people with any illness. As leafy greens contain iron, an excess of it is harmful. Consult a dietitian to optimize intake.
Fruit and vegetables provide fiber, folic acid, vitamin A, C, B-12 and B-6. Eat a combination of seasonal and locally grown fruits and vegetables instead of sticking to just particular varieties.
Protein-rich foods
Getting an adequate amount of protein is important since protein provides energy and keeps a person feeling full. Replace simple carbohydrates with proteins. Protein helps to repair and replace liver cells damaged by hepatitis C. Lean protein foods are beneficial for Hepatitis C. Some of the lean protein-rich foods for Hepatitis C are seafood, nuts, eggs, and soy products. The amount of protein you consume is determined on your age and activity level. Around 5 to 6 and a 1/2 ounces of protein may be required. Higher protein intake helps to build the muscles in the liver and reduces fluid buildup.
Complex carbohydrates rich foods
Carbohydrates are essential to maintain the energy levels in the body. Brown rice, oatmeal, whole wheat, wild rice, and whole oats are all good sources of complex carbohydrates. They are enriched with Zinc, fiber, vitamin B and minerals. Try to opt for whole grains rather than the white or refined type of carbohydrates. Whole grains are higher in fiber content. Opt for gluten-free grains if you are allergic to gluten.
Dairy
Dairy products are an excellent source of protein and calcium. Choose low-fat products over high-fat ones as they are easier on the liver.
