The Longest-Lasting Cut Flowers to Buy

Flowers are an integral part of our lives. They symbolize so many emotions (i.e., love, sympathy, thanks, congratulations) and they brighten up any day. The tradition of giving flowers as a gift has been with us for a very long time to show deep love, sympathy, and appreciation for those we care about. Yet, when we give flowers, we want them to have staying power.

Here are the longest-lasting flowers to give as gifts:

1. Chrysanthemums
These flowers are perfect for a wide range of occasions such as birthdays, first dates, in sympathy, and most commonly as Mother’s Day gifts (they’re also known as mums). And lucky for the recipient, chrysanthemums are among the most durable flowers in existence due to three factors: their tough, waxy exterior that protects them from drying out and cracking; deep tubers that can store water for long periods; and finally a root system made up primarily of fibrous, fleshy roots with high concentrations of xylem cells responsible for conducting moisture throughout its entire length. For chrysanthemums to last as long as expected, cut the stem (about 2 to 5 centimeters) and place them in a clean vase with clean water. Ensure not to place them exposed to direct heat or close to the ripening fruits as they will break down more quickly. Also, you will promote their durability by using the required flower food and changing the water frequently.

2. Orchids
Orchids of every color are as popular as they are fragrant when given as birthday gifts, for Easter, for Mother’s Day, for expectant moms at baby showers, and as get-well gifts. Their care is actually quite easy for such an exquisite flower. First, avoid overwatering orchids. You can do this by misting them lightly with a spray bottle or using the ice watering method by adding three ice cubes to their pot each week. Make sure they get enough sunlight, but never put them in direct sunlight. Finally, keep your orchid plants at a temperature between 65 and 75 degrees fahrenheit. Orchids are an amazing plant with rare and unique characteristics that allows them to last for long periods without dying or regenerating. When in dormancy, orchid roots will stay dormant deep underground so ensure there is plenty of dirt in the pot so that living organisms can help feed the precious bulbs.

3. Carnations
Most often gifted on Mother’s Day, pink carnations signify a mother’s love. Yet carnations also symbolize luck, which is why they are often worn in lapels. Make sure to place carnations in a clean vase, in a cool spot that’s away from direct sunlight. Replace the water often and as soon as it starts to turn murky to promote carnation longevity. Carnations can last up to six weeks when left in freshwater, but if you prefer them fresh or planted in dry soil or moss-covered surfaces without any worries about them wilting.

4. Lilies
The fragrant pink calla lily can be perfect for an anniversary or first date. This big, fragrant bloom is also well received at weddings, baby showers, housewarmings, and thank you gifts. Lillies are both thoughtful and beautiful gifts; thus, with careful care, they will be durable. Place lilies in a vase with water and make sure to change the water regularly along with the appropriate flower food. The reason for the lily’s durability is the way plants store water. Through cellular divisions, lily cells contain up to 7 billion xylems, which absorb moisture when needed and release it slowly when necessary.

5. Hydrangeas
This abundant early summer bloom is often gifted to new parents, as a housewarming gift, or on
wedding anniversaries. Hydrangeas as a bloom represent abundance due to the vast number of flowers in each round, colorful bloom. Depending on the shade, hydrangeas may symbolize love, harmony, growth, and peace. To keep your hydrangea blooms full and lavish, place them in a cool place next to a window so they receive adequate sunshine. Avoid watering them too much to avoid wilting and rot. Hydrangeas can also be transplanted into pots or tubs with the roots intact. They require minimal water and come back each season.

5. Gerbera daisies
These flowers are perfect gifts for new love on Valentine’s Day, birthdays, first dates, friendship anniversaries, and Mother’s Day. There are a few reasons why gerbera daisies last so long. Not only are they hardy and resilient, but the petals close up after opening for 15 minutes or more, thus maintaining their colour longevity. To ensure they last, place them in a bacteria-free vase, fill it halfway with warm water, cut the long stems, and place them in the water with no leaves below the water level. Showcase your daisies where they can receive adequate sunshine and add the appropriate flower food as required.
