Treatments for Osteoporosis Prevention

Treatments for Osteoporosis Prevention

Osteoporosis is a condition where the bones diminish or weaken because of a lack of calcium or other conditions or medications. Osteoporosis is common in post-menopausal women lacking hormones they had in younger years. Without proper treatment, the condition can lead to broken bones. Osteoporosis means “porous bone”. Under a microscope your bones look like a honeycomb. In patients with osteoporosis, the honeycomb patches grow bigger as the density of the bone weakens.

Patients with osteoporosis are very fragile and can break bones from a mere sneezing fit.
Here are the options for osteoporosis treatment, keep in mind that treatments differ dependant up the patient and some of the treatments include the following:

1. Medications
Doctors use bone-building medications as the name suggests, to build bones. Some of the medications include:

  • Evenity (romosozumab-aqqg): This is an injectable sclerostin inhibitor drug used to prevent fractures in post-manopausal women who have osteoporosis and are at risk for fractures. The medicine is relatively safe but some of the side effects may include neck pain, insomnia, edema (or swelling of the feet and ankles), and muscle spasms.
  • Forteo (teriparatide): Forteo is a synthetic form of parathyroid hormone that is used to increase bone mineral density and bone strength to avoid fractures. The medicine may have many side effects, including concentration issues, depression, insomnia, and leg cramps.
  • Other osteo medications include, Prolia (denosumab injections) and estrogen replacement therapy.

2. Exercise
A healthy diet and 20-30 minutes of physical activity a day can help strengthen your body and promotes cardiovascular health.

3. Osteoporosis prevention
Doctors prescribe a healthy dose of medications and life-style changes to help prevent Osteoporosis including:

  • Calcium and vitamin D to support bone health.
  • A well-balanced diet devoid of sugary foods, drinks and junk food.
  • Bone building foods such as fruits and vegetables.
  • Regular exercises to strengthen the body.
  • Cease smoking and reduce alcohol intake.
  • Yearly bone scans to track and monitor osteoporosis.
  • Your body needs calcium in order to keep your bones strong, without a proper diet you are at increased risk of Osteoporosis.

With proper diet and regular medication the outlook for patients with osteoporosis is bright. If the condition is caught early on the process, then the outlook for management is much better than a late stage discovery. Life expectancy is not impacted by the condition and suffers can expect to enjoy a long life.
